These guys even camp with us. The dog is 9 years old next month and the rat (yep, it's a rat) will be 1 in the fall. When we travel they go by carrier - one for each of them. They sit in the back seat buckled and ready to explore.
Shelley, your dog is so cute, wish I could say the same for your rat. They scare me to death! Our granddaughter has one and loves it so much, and I can't bear to look at it.... to each is own.
These fellows are very special to our family. The dog is an American Eskimo/Pom mix. The rat, is not white with red eyes nor all black - which were on the "not" list. To be honest Dolores, I can blame my "Seaside Friend's" son for introducing our family to rats as pets. Actually, he is quite nice - if you can't see his tail, you forget he's a rat. :)
We have pre-conceived ideas of some animals that are hard to surmount, don't we? Perhaps if they had a nicer name (like furbies) we could warm to them more easily. My step-daughter had 2 rats and 2 degus for awhile - must confess the degus were easier to take to, but the rats had nicer personalities.
I hate to corret you, but I will have had Ollie for 2 years on December 22nd. And he's my baby boy... oh and our seaside friend's son's never got that big... thus he called me the crazy rat lady instead of the crazy cat lady...

Love your pets, Shelley. Yes, even the rat!

True not matter if we are speaking of animals or sometimes people, we often have pre-conceived ideas don't we? Good point!
Most people think he (the rat) is cute until:
1. They see his tail.
2. Realize he's a rat and not a very large hamster.
It never fails to make them inquire when we have him outside when camping though! LOL
