Symbolism

An infant often has a soother.
A child has a blanket.
A toddler a teddy bear.

As adults we also have
'things'
that symbolize
security, happiness or other such emotion.

Sometimes we don't even realize
that we are 'holding' onto something that
represents these things to us.
We think we have outgrown them.
Such as a child has their blanket.

represented a lot of things:
Relaxation
Friendship
Peace and tranquility.

It also represents an 'Oasis' I can no longer afford.

I spent the weekend,
with the help of others,
removing everything from our 40' Park Model
to make way for a new family.
I hope that whomever they are,
 they are able to create
wonderful memories such as we have.

When I pulled that blind and locked the door
for the last time,
it symbolized so many changes yet to be.

Thank you everyone, for helping me.

be the small,
nameless moments
you spend smiling with someone
who matters to you" Unknown

A salute to Co-workers & Friendships

Recently one of the Maintenance men with whom
Black Rose works,
was in a serious motor vehicle accident.

Although she is not one of  their 'crew',
she often travels in/out of the Park with them
as they begin/end their shifts.

She has gotten to know them well
and has been friends with one of them for a number of years.

Today is a 'dreary day' and not 35 degrees so it is the perfect
day to make my 'Peanut Butter Pies"
for the guys.

BR thought they could use a bit of cheering up.

So we will send two of these,
along with Tim Horton's Coffee
and 2 Hot Chocolate in the morning.

When I go to pick her up today,
we will take one to Eric and his family as well.

Recipe for 2 pies:

Cream the following:
2 blocks of Cream Cheese (250 g each)
1 Large tub of cool whip (slightly thawed)
2 Tbsp of Peanut Butter (+/-)
1 Tbsp of sugar (+/-)

Spoon into Graham Crust Pie Shell

And 'lace' with President's Choice
Chocolate Syrup
Ice cream & Dessert topping

Keep refrigerated.
Best eaten the next day.

Where do the days go?

Graduation is upon us - wow where did that go? 13 years already, really?  Black Rose has made some great friends whom she will remember fondly as she heads to University. Others, like all of us, are some she will glady put from her mind.

We camp seasonally as a lot of you know from reading my Blog and as such are having 2 Graduation 'parties' for friends/family.  One will be here at the house and the other at the Campground.  Most of these same young adults came to our place for a party at Christmas time- here's what I found in my kitchen.
 A gift wrapped guest.

What a great bunch of friends!!   :-)
CONGRATULATIONS TO EACH OF YOU!

September 2011

The summer is winding down, the sun has come out hot with little air movement here on the East Coast. Camping season is coming to a close -sadly. I have spent the last couple of days cleaning things out and putting things away. I have noticed others within the Campground have been doing to the same. It seems the summer just got here - with this weather influx it just did - and people are out and about visiting.
Beach exploration is done in shorts with one's head down.

Friendships from across the years are shared over a pot luck.

Wow, it's been 11 years and the kids have grown up together.  Graduation year for one, first year of high schoolfor another and middle school for the third one - girlfriends and boyfriends, dates and new discoveries.

Be safe my friends - see you in the Spring.

Lake Utopia

While visiting St. George we were invited to stay at the Cottage with Sue. What a spot - we didn't want to leave! Thanks again Sue & Steve!!

Just sitting on the floating deck, watching the fish jump and kicking our feet like kids.

The view through the window during the early morning hours.

The sun sets once more on Lake Utopia - thanks again Sue!

Black Rose celebrates her BD a bit late

We combined Geo-Caching with a day at a local beach and a weekend stay.
With everyone's schedules it was difficult to get 4 teens
together all at once.

Happy Birthday late my dear girl. Love you.

Duck Pond

Duck Pond too.  :)

Below we are at a Graveyard getting the clues
for a puzzle cache.
Wahooo they solved it.

Black Rose's Big Adventure June 27th

Well, my girl has left me for her trip to Europe.  She earned and raised the funds
needed and after a year and a half has finally boarded the plane.

Her BEST FRIEND since Kindergarten has also gone.  I do hope
that they are able to bunk together.

Oh to see the bunch of them...........what a sight.

Even the dog is missing her already - she had her picture taken with him prior
to leaving the house.  Excited and nervous she admitted.

First Stop - Ireland.   I can't wait to hear the stories and
to see the photos.

Have a great time my girl- you have earned it.  What a year,
one of only 4 Grade 11 students with averages over 90% in multiple subjects,
driver's license and a trip to Europe!  Wahoooooooo- sign me up.

We love you.  Be safe my friend.

ST, MARTINS - Nearly as big an attraction as the famous sea caves and the Fundy Trail, Mickey Huttges was remembered fondly on Friday as the soul of St. Martins.

Mickey Huttges, the beloved meat man from St. Martins, died Thursday night. Here, he is seen sitting outside his store with a wooden carving he called Herbie. He saw the carving and loved it so much he bought it.
The proprietor of the historical village's century-old country store and one of New Brunswick's most colourful characters, Huttges died suddenly Thursday night at his home in Henry Lake following a typically long day behind the meat counter at Huttges General Merchants. He was 67.

Known as Mickey the Meat Man, over the course of four decades he had become famous for his home-made sausage and home-spun humour, and had customers from all over the province and New England. It wasn't uncommon for some to travel long distances to fill their coolers and be entertained, always leaving with a smile on their face.

"People came not only for his groceries, sausage and meats, but for Mickey himself,'' Rodney Weston said Friday as he stood in the store, where friends and customers gathered after learning of his passing. "He was an institution in St. Martins.

"This was so sudden, so unexpected, such a shock. It is going to leave a big hole in the community. He is really going to be missed."

A native New Brunswicker, he learned to be a butcher by watching his father, Henry Huttges Sr., and grew up working in his dad's meat stall at the City Market in Saint John. As much a part of St. Martins' charm as its shipbuilders' houses, he had run Huttges General Merchants since the 1960s with the exception of a brief period when he helped with the construction of Point Lepreau.

For the last year he had been renovating the store, which still has its original tin ceilings, and soon planned to move into an apartment above it with his long-time partner, Cherri Wilson. He was previously married to Betty MacMillan, the manager of business development for the Port of Saint John and mother of his four children, sons Colin, Peter and Billy and daughter, Denyse, an actress and movie producer in Hollywood who uses the professional name Cayman Grant.

He also is survived by his twin brother, Jim Huttges, St. Martins' mayor.

"The store isn't going to be the same without him,'' said Betty Jones, an employee for 10 years. "He would give you the shirt off his back. He was the most kind-hearted soul I ever met."

Funeral arrangements were not complete on Friday, but undoubtedly there will be an outpouring. The parking lot outside the store was crowded in the afternoon as stunned customers came to visit, and inside, the phone rang almost constantly.

They were terribly sad, but smiled as they exchanged anecdotes.

"I used to tell people that Mickey had an opinion, and you heard it whether you wanted to or not,'' Weston said.

The area's former MLA and most recent Member of Parliament, Weston recalled Mickey Huttges' gift for gab, love of politics and disdain for politicians. A Tory, Weston recalled once asking Huttges, an ardent Liberal, to support him.

"He stopped short and stared at me and said, 'Let me think about it'," Weston said. "Next time I came in, he asked if I had a membership card for him to sign and he did.

"He became a terrific supporter."

A man who loved to pontificate, Mickey would often meet people at the door and follow them around the aisles, talking and arguing.

"He would escort them around, walk them out the door and then follow them to their cars,'' Jones said. "They'd be driving away and he'd still be talking.

"That was Mickey."

Once a baseball player for the St. Martins Mets senior league team, he also loved to hunt and fish.

"You couldn't have gotten a better uncle,'' his nephew, Bruce Huttges, said Friday, his eyes pools of tears. "When I was a teenager and needed a vehicle, he would always lend me his car. He took all of us fishing.

"He was a special guy."

When she arrived for work on Friday, Jones found a photo of Mickey Huttges pinned to a community bulletin board outside the front door. The words, "You were the soul of St. Martins, Mickey, and you will always be with us" were written across the bottom.
"I still don't believe it,'' Allan Love, a longtime customer said, shaking his head. "We were friends for a long, long time.

"Everyone loved Mickey. He was a friend to everybody."

**On a personal note - these quotes are so Mickey.  Our family will miss him greatly and our hearts go to his family and the community as they mourn the loss of a 2nd 'icon' of the community within 13 days of each other.  RIP our friend we shall all miss our chats.** This photo was 'snapped' by chance on our last visit - of course he was always on the move so it's not very clear.

Our Friendship Story

The translation is...

Once upon a time,I was lonely; looking for somebody; who would be like me in everyway; so that we two had something in common to do and say. Then I found you one day and said; "You will be my forever friend"; you made me so happy, you bright end up my life; we got along so well and had lots of fun in our own stride...

And now I just can not imagine what I would have done without you; for you are so wonderful, funny and sweet. You are my dream-come-true; so,dear friend, say you will always be there,to share in my good and bad times and to tell me 'You care'.

Blogging Along

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed! It was my 'Seaside Friend' that suggested that I begin a Blog and here I sit after typing so many entries.  It's been a journey through illnesses, deaths, wellness and many celebrations - thank you for sharing each of them with me.

I have met many people through this excercise and to each of you I 'tip my hat'.   We each are very different from one another and that adds to the enjoyment of reaching out.

As I continue to Blog, we will keep an eye on Black Rose as she travels through Graduation plans, a trip to Europe, Graduation .......     Naturally, we will continue to head to the Bay of Fundy whenever we can through our journeys here on "Think outside of the box". We'll follow hubby and me through further renovations and into the 'empty nest' stage of our lives. Where does the time go????   Can I please turn back the clock on some things?  No?  Well, you can't blame a girl for trying.

Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind.
"Pooh!" he whispered.
"Yes, Piglet?"
"Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's paw.
"I just wanted to be sure of you." ~A.A. Milne

"Beyond the Grave" 3

Please see previously posted "Beyond the Grave" for entire content and explaination. First we had pizza and then we lit the diningroom with many candles........

It has been years since our beloved friend Lorraine died. The mysterious circumstances of her death have never been solved. New information has surfaced that indicates Lorraine was murdered by someone close to her. A séance was held under the guidance of well known Psychic Madame Rose to reveal which one of us is the Murderer!

Suspects: (an overview from our household - Black Rose's Boyfriend's family were the other suspects)

Vanessa Cross, Age 28 (me)
Daughter of Lorraine & Anthony. She is obsessed with the idea that her mother’s spirit will reveal the secrets surrounding her death.

David Cross, Age 40 (hubby)
Politician. Married to Vanessa. He has had a successful political career in the five years following Lorraine’s death.

Madame Rose, Age 60 (Black Rose)
Popular spiritualist and advisor with many wealthy clients. She was Lorraine’s confidante and friend.

Many of asked who the murder was.  Well, simply put, I can't tell you.  Some other reader may want to pick up this game and play a round with their friends.  We all had a great time and it has been suggested to play again (wonderful).  Now, to hit the streets looking for another of these "An Evening of Murder" games by Max Haines.  You see, after you have played it once (there are 17 different ones), you already know who the murder is.....so it's off to find another.   This one required 8 players, but there are others that need more or less peeps to play.  In our case we had ages from pre-teen to adult playing, so depending on the comprehension level and the content.........off you go, find one and have a great time.

“Beyond the Grave”

It has been years since our beloved friend Lorraine died. The mysterious circumstances of her death have never been solved. New information has surfaced that indicates Lorraine was murdered by someone close to her. A séance will be held under the guidance of well known Psychic Madame Rose to reveal which one of us is the Murderer!
Crime Scene:
Five years ago Lorraine Lockwood, the wealthy wife of prestigious lawyer, Anthony Lockwood, died in her home under mysterious circumstances. An autopsy revealed that she was poisoned with potassium cyanide.

At the inquest, authorities ruled that there was insufficient evidence to hold a trial. Her death was attributed to “person or persons unknown”. The case has never been solved.

The Suspects are:
Anthony Lockwood, Age 53
Husband of Lorraine (the deceased). Senior partner in a law firm and influential in business and the community. Anthony married Jessica Cates twelve months after Lorraine’s death.

Jessica Cates, Age 36
Former Actress. She became Anthony’s third wife. His money and influence has allowed her to live in the extravagant style she was accustomed to.

Vanessa Cross, Age 28
Daughter of Lorraine & Anthony. She is obsessed with the idea that her mother’s spirit will reveal the secrets surrounding her death.

David Cross, Age 40
Politician. Married to Vanessa. He has had a successful political career in the five years following Lorraine’s death.

Susanne Smythe, Age 50
Childhood friend of Lorraine. She is a well-to-do socialite with no apparent means of support.

Madame Rose, Age 60
Popular spiritualist and advisor with many wealthy clients. She was Lorraine’s confidante and friend.

Dr. Thomas Blackman, Age 50
The Lockwood family physician. Once a surgeon in a large hospital, he now has his own exclusive practice and caters to the wealthy.

Shawn Easton, Age 34
Son of Anthony from his first marriage. He lives his life in the fast lane of the racing circuit. Reckless and headstrong, he thrives on danger.

Max Haines invites you to  'An Evening of Murder'. Host a Murder Mystery in your home, invite friends to become the suspects for An Evening of Mystery and intrigue.

This is how we spent Wednesday evening - the 8 of us playing a Murder Mystery Game.  Skills required - a sense of humor, imagination, curiousity, listening skills and of course, friends & food.

Monday - CPR needed again today (Matthew)

I wanted to share with you updates on little Matthew and his fight.  I receive updates daily (thanks Pauline). I wanted to share these ones with you as I received them without much edification (names etc).

"We're off to a bad start this week. Michelle and the nurse had just turned Matthew onto his belly and he turned almost black. They had to perform CPR to bring him back again. Michelle talked to Dr Litz and she said that he may have the NEC bowel infection again. If he does she feels that he may never be able to handle food. If this is the case she suggested that we strongly consider a DNR. It is hard to even type those letters let alone consider this for our son.

Matthew had an xray done a few minutes ago and we will have the results soon".

Update: Mon, 23 Aug 2010 21:08:03 -0300
To: undisclosed-recipients:;
Subject: Monday evening - what a day

"Hey folks,

From what I understand this daily update gets passed around quite a bit. I'm sure that in the course of its journey it reaches an inbox or two of some one who doesn't share my faith. There are some reading this that may not understand why I believe what I do or how I can have hope at all. I'll be perfectly honest. My faith hasn't been what it should have been over the past few years. Not that I abandoned it, but more that I was taking God for granted. Matthew's struggle has been like a bucket of cold water in the face helping me to realize how much I need to trust Him. Jeremiah 29:11 says, " For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Matthew's stay at the IWK has forced me into a place of complete dependence on God. I believe that the medical community is an amazing an essential part of the world, but it seems as if they are giving up on my little guy. Some view him as a puzzle, but when they can't explain or fix it they are eager to say things like, "He may not be compatible with life" or "He just may not be meant to be."

I believe we are at a point now where it is only God who can heal Matthew. Let me explain. If I go to the doctor and tell him with a broken arm he can put a cast on it and it will get better. I believe that God can heal a broken arm, too, but we often don't ask for things like this. Mostly, it is because we know the doc can fix it and it doesn't stretch us as people to go to the doctor. If I broke my arm tomorrow you would see me at the hospital. In Matthew's case the docs are completely baffled. They can't explain why he is as sick as he is. They have identified certain things, but they don't know why certain things are happening.

My prayer for Matthew is for God to heal Matthew's body and make him whole either through a divine touch or by giving the doctors a clue. I'm good either way, but at this point I believe that it will be God's intervention if the docs are able to treat him because this is more than a broken arm. Don't mistake this for frustration or feelings of incompetence with his doctors. Matthew has received excellent care. The docs don't know what is going on and they need God to help them "flick on the switch." God has already done some great things in Matthew's life and I would love to have Him show His power to his doctors and nurses by touching his body and healing it. I have heard some fantastic stories about things like that, too.

Michelle talked to Dr. Litz late this afternoon. She is confused that the arrests are so random and she told Michelle that they are waiting to get a consult from the chief of the surgical dept. who is on vacation for a few days. He will be able to tell if it is NEC or not. They are going to do another x-ray tomorrow to see if "he is miraculously better" (Dr. Litz's words). The doc has asked for a miracle...please pray for one. Dr. Litz has other theories. One is that it may be neurological. In this case his brain wouldn't be functioning well and the prognosis is not good. Another is that one of the collateral arteries (he has many which formed in the absence of pulmonary arteries) is attached directly to his belly and stealing oxygen from the belly. This would explain the NEC belly infection, but again the prognosis isn't good. Either would help to explain, but either of these diagnosis won't help Matthew. Dr. Litz said she would most likely recommend a DNR if either is found to be true.

For a couple of weeks now I ask God each morning for enough strength to make it through today. I don't need more than that. I'm good if I can make it through the day. Tomorrow I'll ask God for the same thing. I am asking for more for Matthew. He needs a miracle. Please continue your prayers for our family.

Thanks for listening,
Colin, Michelle and Matthew"

**Thank you to each of you who have shared your hopes for the best and prayers.**

Early Morning Rain

I was awakened around 5 this morning by the sounds of dancing rain and thunder clapping in the distance.  I stepped out onto the deck to appreciate the sounds of the light rain on the tin covered roof.  The water coming off of the eave trough.   The dog, who is afraid of thunder, at my heels.  I stood for awhile just appreciating the warmth and sounds of the rain.

Black Rose and I were saying yesterday, as we were coming back from our visit to the Kingston Peninsula with 'Huck', that it was going to rain.  The leaves had begun to turn upside down.  Have you ever noticed that?  The leaves turn over as if to drink as they flutter in the wind.    Even though it was gorgeous and sunny they had begun their 'show' for us as we traveled back towards St. Martins.

I also love to watch a lightening storm.  I remember a time, years ago sitting here in the 'cottage' watching the lightening dance over the ocean.  We sat on the floor in front of the patio doors,  a very young Black Rose and I.  In recent years,  I had the pleasure of a nice 'storm watch' with My Seaside Friend, Gwen.  As the lightening danced across the skies, us safely tucked under the eave of her porch, we sat discussing our children and other common interests.

I remember when we were young and going outside to play in the rain!  Wow, kids now don't even go outside let alone to play in the rain.  Imagine if they knew we used to use rain water to wash our hair!  Those were the days.........ahhh.....summer rain, thunderstorms and memories what a wonderful combination.

Black Rose - it's your Birthday!!!

July 1995 (1 year):
Dearest you mean so much to us.  We waited years to be parents not knowing if we ever would be.  The Doctors said we may never become parents and after years of trying - you arrived on a humid, hot July evening.  You are such a happy-go-lucky baby. You are a real gem. You're a joy to have for company and you learn very quickly.  As we reach your 1st Birthday, so much has changed and we've learned so much together.
Written May 2001
Dearest, you have grown so much! You are still a happy child who is very polite and uses her manners (sometimes a bit testy).  You are a real joy to have around.  Today Grandpa was teaching you to skip.  Do you remember?  He had to 'scrunch' to fit in the rope.  Love you Kitten xoxo Mama.

At 16 you have become a beautiful young lady of whom we are extremely proud. You truly live up to the meaning of your name 'Lovable Child'.  May you achieve in life that which you set your heart on accomplishing.  We know you will continue to do well as you travel on this journey called life.

Love Mama and Dad
